Though dressed in T-shirt and trousers, Khan is sporting the Thugs look, complete with a nose ring, three ear piercings and long hair held together with a hairband (through the length of our conversation, he insists the hair is not like this in the film).
With him is Shamath Majumdar, marketing and content development head at Aamir Khan Productions, the film production and distribution company the actor founded in 2001.
Khan walks into the room after I’ve been waiting for about 15 minutes. Trade experts say it is the only Indian film currently in the pipeline with the potential to top the ₹ 500 crore earned in India by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). The budget already stands at ₹ 250 crore. Thugs, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif alongside Khan and shot in 3D, certainly fits the bill. After the success of the Baahubali franchise, there is a growing belief that the only way to bring audiences to theatres today is to create big-screen spectacles. Instead, they position Thugs as part of a new era of film-making in Bollywood, as film-makers grapple with competition from streaming services. While it was recently reported that the film draws from the hugely successful Disney franchise Pirates Of The Caribbean, Khan’s team denies any connection. He’s been shooting across Malta, Thailand and India for Yash Raj Films’ action adventure Thugs Of Hindostan, which is scheduled to release on the Diwali weekend in November. I told Yash, I would be watching his film on 14th April in a cinema hall as I am a fan of the KGF franchise, like millions of others.Khan has had an industrious year. I also told him that since his was an action film whereas mine was a family film as it was a love story, the two films would hopefully not eat into each other’s collections. I told him that KGF was an established brand name and so, people would definitely patronise the sequel. He shared, "In fact, I had a long heart-to-heart conversation with Yash who was very supportive of my plan. I was very touched by their gesture."Īamir spoke to Yash over a call and revealed that he was a KGF fan. They understood my viewpoint and were good enough to ask me to go ahead in spite of their film releasing on the same day.
I also explained that a Baisakhi release for my film would be ideal. I told them how the lockdown had made matters difficult for all producers. I wrote to them and explained my predicament. He said, "Before I finalised the date, I profusely apologised to the producer (Vijay Kiragandur), director (Prashanth Neel), and lead man (Yash) of KGF Chapter 2. He offered to promote KGF: Chapter 2 for choosing the same release date.
